July 14, 2007
On Friday, July 13, we took a train ride from Prague to Dresden, Germany. The train ride was not bad at all; it was approximately a 2 hour trip with beautiful scenery out the window! Just looking out the window, Germany was so beautiful with greenery everywhere, gardens, and quaint houses.
First mission when we arrived in Dresden was to find our way to the hotel. We talked with a very nice lady working for the tram/bus line who helped us find our route to the hotel. We arrived at the hotel, found our rooms and rested for a couple hours before we were to venture out into the city.
After resting, we went to the center of Dresden to get dinner and see the beautiful scenery. Chris, Aaron, and I found a Biergarten, where we got Hahnchen (1/2 chicken, kartoffeln (potatoes), and Wasser(water…well, Mineralwasser( carbonated mineral water...I didn’t mean to order carbonated…it was not good at all.) Then, we walked around the city viewing the Elbe River, Martin Luther statue, Frauen Kirche (church), and many other sights.
On Saturday, July 14, we woke up and traveled to the Pfund Molkerei (cheese shop), and ate a fabulous lunch. We all ordered omelets with Kartoffeln (potatoes), and Chris and Aaron ordered suppe (soup) as well. Chris had chunky cheese soup and Aaron had potato with bratwurst! We then split a piece of cheesecake and ice cream with banana and chocolate syrup.
After lunch, we headed to the Elbe River to buy tickets for a steamboat tour later in the evening. We bought our tickets for the 8:00pm tour, which included a buffet dinner and dancingJ. Haha. The music was not that great. In fact, the band played “Country Roads” and “Achy Breaky Heart”. It was quite comical. Despite the horrible music, the tour was a relaxing 4 hours along the Elbe River with beautiful buildings and houses in sight.
Once off the steamboat tour, we went to the McCafe to get some dessert. I ordered for Chris & I in german..zwei schokoladen kuchen ( 2 chocolate cakes!). Yay, the lady understood me very well too! After getting the cake, we headed back to our hotel for some rest.
On Sunday, July 15, we woke up, packed our bags, and checked out of our hotel. We traveled to the center of Dresden, found a nice restaurant to eat lunch, and even picked up a couple more souvenirs before we left. The lunch was pretty good; I ordered a soup with parsley and mozzarella sticks and a ham sandwich. They both were delicious. After finishing lunch, we traveled to the train station to get on the train back to Prague. I didn’t want to leave Dresden…we ran into very friendly people all over, and in general it was a very relaxing trip.
The train ride back to Prague was interesting. I thought we would be able to get some sleep on the 2 hour train ride, but because three Czech girls sat next to us for almost half of the trip talking NON-STOP, we couldn’t get any rest. It was quite annoying because the language is very different and the girls were talking so fast--almost without breathing in between. Anyway, we finally arrived in Prague, and got back to the apartment. We had only about an hour before we had to leave to go to a Jazz Festival Andreas invited us to. The Jazz Festival was enjoyable and relaxing. A jazz band comprised of a piano player, sax/flute, bass, and drums played first. They were amazingly talented. Also, U.S. legend, Bobby Shew, played the trumpet with the jazz orchestra…I have never heard of the guy, but he was very good. After a very long day, we traveled home to the apartment to get some much needed rest.
