Yesterday started off well enough. We all woke up early because we had to go back to the bus tour and pick up my camera, that I had "misplaced." On the way we stopped at a familiar place and got some not so familiar food; McDonalds. Those golden arches beckoned us come to a unique breakfast. I ended up getting a sausage patty on an English muffin type bread with lettuce, tomato, and some weird horseradish sauce and a hash brown all chased down with an American coffee. Oh and one more thing, some nice ketchup for the low price of 5Kr per package. Yes it seemed a bit chincy to charge for ketchup, but for my part I was grateful that it didn’t taste like the sweetened ketchup in Italy!
After an expensive breakfast, by Czech standards at least, (Approx. $3) we retirved my camera, whereas Aaron immediately wanted me to take a picture of him trying to catch a fiberglass pig jumping off a diving board. Don’t ask.
After picking up my camera it was off to the Hilton to meet up with Mr. Deem. Once we arrived there he was still feeling a bit under the weather, so we gave him another hour to sleep and hung out downstairs with a lively pair. Her name is Sunny, she's 79 years old and still walks 2 miles a day. His named is Norman he is 86, a former optometrist, who loves tennis and is a…get ready for it…. I didn’t know it existed….Californian Republican! We had a great conversation, where they spouted off great things about Regent, something that was a welcome change.
After an hour Mr. Deem then came downstairs and ushered us off to a riverboat cruise. During the cruise we decided what the goals of the day were. The boys went on the upper level of the boat and got some really great footage.
After our cruise, Mr. Deem headed back to his hotel to get some rest, while the boys and I trucked off to the Charles Bridge. It is a beautiful bridge with 15 or so Marble statues. We took the opportunity to snap some pictures and then headed off to meet our goals.
We ended up meeting the first goal at the globe bookstore, an English bookstore in the heart of Prague. After basking in the glory of the internet for a few seconds, we got right to work. We posted our blogs, sent out some email, checked the weather, and had some coffee! Feeling quite productive we decided we deserved a break and headed home to take a nap. Chris and I were feeling quite tired, Aaron however is like the energizer bunny. Chris and I napped and Aaron paced for a couple of hours. We woke up and ran to the grocery store to buy some goods, then went back to sleep again. We did find out that the local newspaper offices were closed on Saturdays, and had to wait to put our ad in.
Around 10pm our phone rang, it was Jason and his wife Simona. Jason is an American we meet in the Prague airport who is married to the best Czech has to offer! Jason had emailed us inviting to show us around Prague. We emailed him back with our new mobile number, and he was quick to call us back! Aaron and I meet him and his wife by the National Museum and walked around Prague by night. I have never seen a city that was more beautiful at night. The square was surrounded with beautiful baroque building, lit-up spiral towers, pointy gothic churches, and coble stone roads. Aaron and I had to be ushered on in awe. Our little party then headed out to a small pub that served the best Mojitos and some traditional Czech food. Simona ordered for us and we ate like kings. We had a goulash, which is like nothing I've ever eaten before and pickled brie cheese. It was a wonderful meal.
Over dinner Simona told us that she worked in the financial section of the local newspaper as an editor of sorts. Which was absolutely perfect, she has agreed to help us post and ad. She also told us her brother was a cab drive who loves Americans and that could show us around. She told us we could get to Vienna for a $5 bus ride AND she taught us how to use the trams. It was a very productive dinner.
After a very interesting tram ride home, Aaron and I wearily walked up the stairs to our apartment. Unfortunately, we were too weary to notice that we had stopped on the second floor and not the third, where our apartment was. We started fiddling with the keys wondering why they wouldn’t open up our door only to discover it was not our door. Slightly embarrassed, we slunk back down the hall only to discover the hall door was broken and we were locked in. After knocking on every door and trying unsuccessfully to call someone, Aaron starts trying to take the door apart. It was a very solid door with a thick glass pane and metal edges.
About an hour latter we were still sitting in the hall trying to get out. Aaron was just about ready to break the door when along came a man that saw our plight and let us out. Freedom was a great feeling. Deciding that it has been a long day, Aaron and I headed up that final flight of stairs and feel into bed for an uneventful rest.
A calm ending to a very eventful day.
You are weird.
